He was only able to heal a handful of sick people thereby placing his hands on them.

You see that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone.

Paul, undoubtedly says that he lived well and that the years he spent alive were worthwhile. He unmistakably claimed to have maintained his faith throughout his fight for it.
Timothy receives encouragement from Paul by being reminded of the value of preserving the faith. It’s like fighting a protracted, nebulous battle to maintain faith.
Paul referred to the protracted conflict as a “good fight” because it is, in fact, a good fight. The timing and outcome of this conflict may be uncertain, but the reward and the reason for our fight—to maintain “the faith”—are never in doubt because we are aware that this faith is the only saving faith that can be found in Jesus Christ.
